Mr. Willie George Townsend 87, a resident of Wetumpka, AL transitioned on May 18, 2022, funeral service will be Wednesday May 25, 2022 @ 1;00p.m.@ Rogers Chapel AME Zion Church, burial to follow at Hillside Memorial & Gardens, family hour will be Tues. May 24, 2022, from 6p.m. -7p.m. Willie George Townsend was born on August 31, 1934, the second oldest of five children to the late Mr. Agnes Townsend and Mrs. Vianna Long Townsend in Elmore County, Alabama. He confessed Christ at an early age and united with the Rodgers Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he was a dedicated member and served faithfully on the Board of Trustee until his death. Willie George received his education from the Elmore County Training School. He worked in the textile industry with J. P. Stevens & Co. in Montgomery, AL. He later pursued a career as a police officer and attended the basic police training course and received his diploma from the Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC). He received a special recognition award from Southwest Alabama Police Academy from Faulkner State College in Bay Minette, AL where he served as the class President. He became the second black Deputy Sheriff with the Elmore County Sheriff Department where he served until, he retired. In his spare time, Willie George enjoyed gardening, fishing on Mitchell Dam, and riding his bicycle through the city of Wetumpka. Willie George Townsend was a member of the Grand Lodge of Alabama, Hill City Masonic Lodge No.21 F&M, Wetumpka, AL where he was recognized for over 40 years of dedication to the length of his cabletow, many achievements and community service. He is preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Vianna Townsend; three brothers, Lee Martin Townsend, Sr., Edward Townsend, and Robert Townsend. He departed this life on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at the comfort of his home. He leaves to cherish is loving and devoted wife, Amanda Townsend; eight children: Valeria Howard, Wetumpka, AL; Vincent (Hope) Townsend, Syracuse, Utah; Tina (Reginald) Tell, Elgie (Vicki) Austin, Jr., Linda (Joe) Merkerson, Melvin Austin, Sr., Sheryl Austin, all of Wetumpka, AL; Ruby Grays, Millbrook, AL; one sister, Mary Anna Gill, Birmingham, AL; three sisters-in-law, Evelyn Johnson Townsend, Montgomery, AL; Ilois Wright Webster, Wetumpka, AL; Arthurine Carter, Montgomery, AL; two brothers-in-law, Billie Carter, Bobby Carter, Montgomery, AL; nineteen (19) grandchildren; twenty-three (23) great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Two adopted sons, Pastor Tyrone Eaves and Ken Eaves, Wetumpka, AL; and one adopted daughter, Ann Calloway. A very devoted nephew and care giver, Lee Martin Townsend, Jr., who voluntarily chose to serve his Uncle Willie faithfully.
