Irene Washington

Irene Washington, 99, a resident of Austin, Texas formerly of Wetumpka, Alabama transitioned October 09, 2023. Funeral services will be October 28th, 2023, at Sweetwater M.B Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Lucious Orum officiating. Burial to follow in churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Irene Wiggins Washington is the granddaughter to the late Mr. Dan Blake and Mrs. Mary Peavy Blake of Wetumpka, Alabama. She is the third child born October 9th, 1924, to the late Mr. “Willie” Wiggins Sr. and the late Mrs. Hattie Blake Harris Wiggins. At an early age, she received Jesus as her personal savior, baptized and became a devoted, faithful, and active member of Sweetwater Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Irene Washington loved the Lord. She also loved her church as well as her church family very dearly. Upon her death, she will be remembered as the oldest living member of her beloved Sweetwater Missionary Baptist Church. She Always was ready and willing to do her part and also contributed her monetary donations faithfully. On the battlefield for her God, at the age of 99 years lived, her spirit was always high and joyful. She never wanted to miss a service, program, or celebration. She earned and deserved the title as the “Mother of the “Church”. Whenever possible Mother Washington would make it a priority to visit other churches as well their programs. She never let anything hinder her from serving her God to the upmost regardless of the circumstances. She would even follow other members to the services and programs or hitch a ride but, nevertheless she was never left behind. Mrs. Washington attended and graduated from Elmore County Training School; she was the valedictorian of her class. Her adventurous endeavors included Mrs. Washington traveling to the Holyland and South America. She taught and substituted at Elmore County School System. It was rewarding to have meet and made aware of the many lives Mrs. Washington had influenced during her time teaching, mentoring, and advocating. Mrs. Irene Wiggins united in marriage to Mr. “Willie” Oliver Washington Sr., Wetumpka, Alabama. From this union six children were born: “Little Irene” aka “Sweet”, Hattie Mae, Regina, Willie James aka “Pumpkin” Oliver Sr, and Ida Ruth. Mrs. Washington housed her family dearly and spoke often of her legacy she’d be leaving five generations of children and family alike. She has six children, thirty-two grandchildren. She departed this life on October 9th, 2023, she’s preceded by her death her husband Mr. Oliver Washington Sr., her brothers Dorman Harris, Willie Wiggins Sr., her sister Zettie Mae Grant, her son Oliver Washington III, her daughter Mrs. Ida Ruth Washington Edwards. Mrs. Washington leaves her precious memories to: Mrs. Irene (Jerry) Matthews, Wetumpka, Alabama, Mrs. Hattie (David) Toodle, Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Regina (Willie) Hoyle, Carrollton, GA. She also leaves cherished memories to her cousins that were more like brothers: Mr. Willie James Wiggin Sr., Wetumpka, Alabama. A host if great-grands, great great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and family as well as extended family whom she dearly loved as so she. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
