Mr. Percy Bernard Gill

Percy Gill was born on September 7, 1972 in Wetumpka, Alabama, and he is the son of the Late Lorenzo Gill and Idell Gill of Wetumpka. Percy attended Wetumpka High School where he was an accomplished athlete. Percy gave his life to Christ at a young age and is a faithful member of Words of Life Church in Wetumpka, Alabama. Following college, viable career opportunities presented themselves in Atlanta, Georgia for several years; however, Percy returned home to Wetumpka to pursue his dreams as a businessman, real estate developer, and public servant. Percy’s strong passion and commitment to civic participation developed from observing his mother Ms. Idell Gill and childhood mentors Mr. & Mrs. Berry, Mr. Isom Thomas and Mr. Jerome Gray. Percy has served on several committees and boards including: Project Manager for The 50th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the steering committee for Leadership Elmore County and graduate of the inaugural class, helped with the creation of Elmore County Economic Development Authority, former board member of Elmore County Community Foundation, and City of Wetumpka Industrial Development Board. Percy served the community as Wetumpka City Councilman of District 2 and Chair of the Elmore County Democratic Conference (ADC). Some accomplishments that he is most proud of include being a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., part of community efforts that established the renaming of the Wetumpka Recreation Center to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center and helping to establish the first Boys & Girls Club in Wetumpka. Percy’s was committed to helping African Americans improve their quality of life by gaining more educational and economic development opportunities. Percy was instrumental in assisting numerous elected officials throughout the state to create and run successful campaigns and to realize their goals of serving the citizens of the state of Alabama. Percy was truly blessed, but more importantly, he was a blessing to all of the people that he touched. Percy departed this life on March 28, 2019. He was preceded in death by his father Lorenzo Gill, Grandmother Alsie Mae Smith, A special aunt Margaret Johnson, and special cousin Micheal Elmore . He leaves to cherish is memory, his devoted wife, Christen Lamonica Gill, one son, Joshua Lorenz Gill, one daughter Porsha Lavonsha Murphy, his mother Idell Gill, his grandmother Pennie Rose Smith, sister Lakerri Gill, sister Yanesha Mitchell, sister Leslie (Richard) Riffle, brother Peondre Gill, brother Darrell Gill, one Special Niece Keliscia ZyDarrian Ward. Twenty-two aunts and uncles Arizona (Houston), Alsie Mae Hill, Ruthie Nell (Sam), Edie (Larry), Edward Smith, Dollie Mae (Phil), Charles (Keyosha), Rebecca (Sonny), Steve (Rose) John (Tammy), Bobby(Precious), Leanza J., George, Matthew, Dan, James,Amos, Robert, Jeremiah, Lenzie, Alberta (James); God Mother Ida Brisbon, God Father Yancey J. Mitchell III, God sister Ladoris Russell; special cousins Travis Bozeman, Stephanie Daniels, Dwight Parker; special friends Ryne Buycks, Lamar Rawls, Bradley Cook, Darryl Sinkfield, and Quinton Ross. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at 1:00 pm from True Divine Baptist Church, 4601 Troy Hwy, Montgomery, AL. Burial at Hillside Memorial Gardens with Hillside Memorial & Gardens directing.
